President Ezra Taft Benson spoke often about the scriptures, in particular the Book of Mormon. It is no wonder we have 3 chapters in a row all about their importance. In Ezra Taft Benson Chapter 9: The Book of Mormon- Keystone of Our Religion, he specifically counsels us to make the Book of Mormon a part of our lives. That means it is not just something we read, it not just something we sometimes talk about, but it is something that if it was taken away, we'd lose our direction and purpose. President Benson said,
What are we doing with the Book of Mormon? Is it gathering dust or is it something that we turn to get answers? Is it just a book that we like or are we sharing it with others because we know it's true value? The Book of Mormon brings us closer to our Savior. We read about His acts and His earthly ministry in the Gospels but we really begin to understand His teachings and the Atonement through the Book of Mormon. It gives us clarity and greater understanding. As we study the teachings and come to know the Book of Mormon, we'll come to know the Savior.
While we can definitely dissect the stories and hash out a timeline and even speculate where the Nephites landed; it is the teachings that we need to make a part of our lives. When we have doubts, we should turn to the Book of Mormon and search for the answers.
President Benson also speaks about the Doctrine and Covenants and it's connection to the Book of Mormon. He stated, "The Book of Mormon is the 'keystone' of our religion, and the Doctrine and Covenants is the capstone, with continuing latter-day revelation. The Lord has placed His stamp approval on both the keystone and the capstone." When was the last time we read the Doctrine and Covenants? It contains revelations given directly for our generation- knowledge of the Lord's will for us in these last days. The Doctrine and Covenants is definitely a book of scripture that needs our attention as well.
If you are looking for a reading schedule to help you understand the truths of the Book of Mormon better, here is a Book of Mormon reading schedule that is easy to print out. I've included a schedule for 1 year, 6 months, 3 months, and even 1 month. As you read it in different time lengths, you'll discover different truths and make different connections. That is one of the things I love most about the scriptures. You can memorize entire chapters but still find new truths as you read it over and over as long as you have the Spirit by your side.

The above hymns are specifically about the Book of Mormon, however, the hymns for Chapter 8 also work well as they go with all the scriptures.
