Let’s move on to Come, Follow Me Alma 32-35 “Plant This Word in Your Hearts” (July 13-19). We’ll focus a lot on the experiment Alma invited the Zoramites to try as it’s the key to all their questions and ours too. Let’s begin!

Save it for later, pin it now!

Key Events and Themes

Alma and Amulek are still among the Zoramites this week. The Zoramites had cast off the poor and would not let them into their synagogues. They only worshiped and prayed once a week. You’ll read several of the teachings Alma and Amulek shared with the Zoramites. As you discuss these teachings, remember to also show the connection between each one. As we experiment upon the word, we develop faith. Faith leads us to pray and trust in the Atonement of Jesus Christ which leads us to repent and prepare to meet God. Here are some key points you may wish to teach your family this week:

  • It’s better to choose to be humble (Alma 32:1-16, 25)

  • Experimenting on the word leads to faith in Christ- we can nourish our testimonies (Alma 32:17-43; 33:12-23)

  • We can worship God in prayer anywhere and anytime (Alma 33:1-11; 34:17-29, 39)

  • The plan of salvation requires an infinite and eternal sacrifice (Alma 33; 34:1-17)

  • We should not procrastinate the day of our repentance- this life is the time to prepare to meet God (Alma 34:32-41)

Experimenting on the word leads to faith in Christ- we can nourish our testimonies (Alma 32:17-43; 33:12-23)

  • Get ready for some experimenting fun! In my newest Gospel Fun Kit, Science Night you’ll do at least six experiments to help you not only discuss experimenting upon the word but what that leads to and why it’s so important. Grab it now for loads of fun this week!

  • If you want to do some growing experiments, try growing a grass house. You’ll need some sponges and fast-growing grass seed. You can also grow a bean in a jar quickly. Compare to growing a seed of faith. What does it take to nourish it? What if you only once a week you watered it and gave it sun?

  • Write out the steps that Alma laid out in Alma 32:27-42 of how you can experiment upon the word then try it for yourself! Print my lab sheet to help you go through the process. What observations did you make this week? How long can the experiment last? What should you do once it’s over? The experiment handout is part of my Science Night Gospel Fun Kit newly released. It walks you through the steps as well as lots of fun experiments!

  • Review Alma’s definition of faith in Alma in Alma 32:21. How would you define it? What are some examples of things we can’t see but know are there?

  • Why did Alma refer to the example of Moses holding up the brass serpent? How does this relate back to experimenting upon the word? How does it relate to the infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ?

We can worship God in prayer anywhere and anytime (Alma 33:1-11; 34:17-29, 39)

  • Obviously, this counsel hits home right now as many of us are still worshiping only in our homes and others are just starting to return to church. While we hope fo the day we can be gathered together again soon, we can absolutely worship any time, any place. You can also reference the parable in Luke 18:9-14 and show how it’s similar to what is happening among the Zoramites. What else can we learn from these verses?

  • How is prayer a form of worship? How do you use prayer to worship God?

  • Remember to discuss the results of your prayer challenge if you invited your family to participate last week. What did you learn about your own prayers? How did the invitation make you rethink the way you pray?

  • President Ezra Taft Benson lays out five ways we can improve our communication with God. Assign each family member to study and share about one of the points. Many of them quote from Alma 34. Elder David A. Bednar also mentions three principles that can make your prayers more meaningful in his October 2008 General Conference talk, “Pray Always.”

  • Go visual. Head to Pray Always and scroll through all the different pieces of art. Notice the different places these prayers take place and the circumstances. What do these images teach you about prayer?

  • Remember to then talk about ways we Hear Him in return as we pray. Remember, Alma is pointing this out after he encouraged them to experiment upon the word. This requires action and listening. So as you pray, how are you listening? You can watch some of the #HearHim videos and ponder it with your family.

  • You can use the search bar at the top of my post to search for more activities and printables about prayer as well.

We should not procrastinate the day of our repentance- this life is the time to prepare to meet God (Alma 34:32-41)

  • Show the a to b to c to d, etc. effect throughout these chapters. If we experiment upon the word, we develop faith which leads us to pray and to trust in the infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ. This in turn leads us to repent and prepare for the day we will meet our Heavenly Father again. Think about your life. How have you seen this chain reaction in your life?

  • You can also use examples of past procrastination and how it leaves you feeling frazzled, unprepared, and just not at peace at all. Can you imagine going before God like that? What does procrastinating our preparation look like? How do we avoid it? If we start to feel like procrastinating, what should we do?
