The sons of Mosiah set out on their missions to the Lamanites. We start with stories of Ammon. He is sent to the land of Ishmael and becomes the servant of King Lamoni. Ammon earns an audience with the king due to his heroic guarding of the king’s sheep. King Lamoni and others fall to the ground in a trance as they become converted to the Lord. Abish gathers the people together to see the great happenings of the Lord. Ammon contends with King Lamoni’s father as he travels to free his brethren in Middoni. Aaron teaches King Lamoni’s father. All his household is converted and religious freedom is granted. Some principles to notice as you study these chapters:
Strengthening our own testimonies help us share the gospel more effectively (Alma 17:1-4).
We can be instruments to bring salvation to God’s children (Alma 17:6-12).
Showing love for others can help them come unto Christ (Alma 17:21-25; 20:9-27; 22:1-3).
We can help prepare others to receive the gospel (Alma 17-18).
Missionaries teach the plan of salvation (Alma 18:36-39; 22:7-14).
Your testimony can have a far-reaching influence (Alma 18-22).
Understanding our dependence on Christ leads to conversion (Alma 18:40-43; 22:15-28).
The Lord extends his arm to us when we repent (Alma 19:36).
I go into more detail in my video. Discover the links and general ideas below.
Strengthening our own testimonies help us share the gospel more effectively (Alma 17:1-4)
It’s a jump of faith to be a missionary let alone go to the people who hate you the most. Invite your family to go through a jumping obstacle course- do some leapfrog, long jumps from one spot to another, jumping jacks, etc. What was needed to get through the course? Were you afraid or dreading any part of the course? To be the missionaries the sons of Mosiah needed to be they had to strengthen themselves spiritually and draw on the power of God. How did they do that? How can you receive power in your life?
We draw upon the power available through the Atonement of Jesus Christ by 1. Prayer! 2. Learning of Christ 3. Choosing to have faith in Christ and choosing to follow Him (Go and Do!) 4. Making and keeping sacred covenants 5. Stretching spiritually (Children’s and Youth Program!). See also Alma 26:12
Missionary Work! (all the chapters)
“Sharing the Message of the Restoration and the Resurrection” by Elder D. Todd Christofferson is a great General Conference talk to study along with these chapters.
1) Love them 2) Be a good example 3) Use the Book of Mormon (scriptures)
“Come and Belong” by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf is another good talk about missionary work from this past General Conference.
Try some of my fun missionary games and activities as you talk about these chapters. Mix and match them to make your games more challenging and fun!
Turn my Come and See Poster into a slider. Discuss what things you want your friends to “come and see” and how you can invite them to do so. Hang the poster on your fridge to remember to do so.
Play my “Bee” a Missionary Now board game. You can use the cards included or combine with my Name 5 cards further down the page for an extra challenge (tie it into how we have to know the gospel to share the gospel). You could also use any questions from the lessons in section 3 of the Preach My Gospel manual.
Try my Ready or Not cards to see how well you do being an on the spot missionary.
Play the Dot Game as you read and discuss the story of Ammon protecting the King’s sheep. Remember to go over the symbolism of Ammon first gathering the sheep and protecting them before he gathered the people to Christ and protected them.
Ammon boldly confronted the obstacle of King Lamoni’s dad’s anger and turned it into an opportunity to not only release his brethren but teach the dad and gain religious freedom for all the Lamanites. How can you change the obstacles in your way into opportunities to learn and grow into something even more? The Lord truly is amazing!
Use my BOLD handouts from Acts 22 to discuss ways you can bold in sharing your testimony of Christ.
Compare how Ammon teaches King Lamoni to how Aaron teaches King Lamoni’s dad. What similarities do you notice? Why do you think that is important?
