By now you may have seen the photo of the current members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in front of the statues of the original twelve apostles and Jesus Christ at the Rome, Italy visitor's center. It reminded me of the story President Packer shared years ago when he, President Spencer W. Kimball and others visited the Vor Frue Church, where the Thorvaldsen statues of the Christus and of the Twelve Apostles stand in Denmark. He shared, "Pointing to the statues, President Kimball said to the kind custodian, 'These are the dead Apostles.' Pointing to me, he said, 'Here we have the living Apostles. Elder Packer is an Apostle. Elder Thomas S. Monson and Elder L. Tom Perry are Apostles, and I am an Apostle. We are the living Apostles.
'You read about the Seventies in the New Testament, and here are two of the living Seventies, Elder Rex D. Pinegar and Elder Robert D. Hales.'"
What a blessing it is to have apostles and prophets on the earth today.

Great scripture to cross reference as we study Matthew 10:19-20. I love the additional phrase found in D&C 84:85, "treasure up in your minds CONTINUALLY the words of life." Relying on the Spirit for the right things to say is all about preparation. As we continue to teach in our homes and communities, we must prepare ourselves to have the Holy Ghost with us and have something in our minds for him to work with! If we never study the scriptures, the Holy Ghost can't bring them to our remembrance. If we aren't worthy to have his companionship, we can't have his help. As we study and prepare ourselves spiritually, we'll know the right things to share with our families, friends, neighbors, and strangers.
I love this perspective from President Spencer W. Kimball of how losing ourselves in service gives us more to find. President Thomas S. Monson also put it this way, "I believe the Savior is telling us that unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives. Those who live only for themselves eventually shrivel up and figuratively lose their lives, while those who lose themselves in service to others grow and flourish—and in effect save their lives."
Print President Kimball's quote to stick in your scriptures by Matthew 10:39.
You can find President Kimball’s quote in a talk by Elder D. Todd Christofferson or in Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Spencer W. Kimball (Chapter 8: Selfless Service).
"How do we hallow the Sabbath day? In my much younger years, I studied the work of others who had compiled lists of things to do and things not to do on the Sabbath. It wasn’t until later that I learned from the scriptures that my conduct and my attitude on the Sabbath constituted a sign between me and my Heavenly Father." -Russell M. Nelson (The Sabbath is a Delight)

Elder David A. Bednar shared a great story five years ago about a pick-up truck stuck in the snow. That image of the truck and the wood has stuck with me ever since. If you are looking for another great way to teach your family about yoking ourselves with the Lord, definitely check out his talk, “Bear Up Their Burdens with Ease.”
