Guess the Talk Version 1

In this version of the Guess the Talk game, the faster you guess the talk, the more points you will receive. Give a card to each person to fill out about a General Conference talk of their choosing- just be sure you narrow it down to a specific Conference (like the most recent sessions). Put the easiest clues at the bottom, the harder ones at the top. When it’s time to play, one person reads off a clue at a time, allowing everyone else to guess. When they are stumped, they can ask for the next clue. If someone guesses the talk based on a clue, they receive the amount of points associated with that clue (1-5 points). For example, if they guess the talk after the first clue, they would receive 5 points.

A few rules you can add depending your group:

  • One word clues only to make it harder.

  • No using words that are included in the title of the talk.

  • Give the session or day the talk was given to make it easier.

  • Play in teams or individually.

  • Use your Conference notebook or the Gospel Library App to look up the talks and guess.

  • Speaker’s names can not be used.

  • No listing off every single talk instead of paying attention to the clues.

 
 

Guess the Talk Version 2

Instead of being clues, in this version the words on the list cannot be used to describe the talk. Again, give each person a card to fill out. With everyone contributing at least one card, you’ll have enough to play in no time. Words that are banned should be ones that would easily give the talk away. For example, if my card was based on President Russell M. Nelson’s talk, “Think Celestial”, I would put “Think” and “Celestial” on the list. If it was on President Jeffrey R. Holland’s talk “Motions of a Hidden Fire” I might add “trapdoor” to the forbidden words list.

A person then has 60 seconds to use any other words to get their team to guess the talk. If they accidentally use a word on the list, they must immediately stop and forfeit that turn. The first team to 10 points wins- 2 point for each card correctly guessed, 1 point if they only guess part of the answer (only the name of the speaker or name of the talk).

Some additional rules to consider:

  • Any words in the title are automatically banned.

  • The speaker’s name is also banned.

  • Instead of forfeiting the card when a banned word is spoken, the team receives negative points based on the number that is next to the banned word.

  • Invite someone from the opposite team to stand next to the person with the clue card to make sure they don’t use any of the forbidden words.

  • Only one word clues can be given to make it harder.

  • Give the person giving the clues 15 seconds to quickly review the talk themselves.

  • Allow people to use their notes or the Gospel Library app to help them guess.

Enjoy both of the games in a row. The first time using the words as clues, the second time using the words as forbidden. It’s a great way to review them all and remember what each talk is about better after.
