Have some fun as you study the Book of Mormon this year! Things can get confusing as you try to understand where the different Book of Mormon cities are and what’s going on where. Help your family or church group get a clearer picture of the Book of Mormon and it’s various locations by taking a walk through the land of the Nephites with this fun activity.
Save it for later, pin it now!
I’ve done all the hard work of figuring out (or making my best guess) how far apart cities are and mapping them out. Now you get to do the fun part- discovering all the locations! Pick a place to start from and an end location goal. Look up the miles, kilometers, or days it takes to travel between the two using my Distance reference chart then start walking, running, biking, etc! Each city has a little bit of information to help you become more familiar with it. Read the descriptions and scripture references to help you start to visualize where you are and where you are going.
There are all sorts of ways you can use this activity such as:
Walking together for a goal. Get your whole children or youth group involved! Everyone reports the days or the distance walked each week to make your group goal. Plan one day to hike together to make it that last bit. Celebrate by doing a big group activity or a bunch of smaller ones in a rotation (activity ideas included in the kit).
This is a great physical and spiritual goal for children and youth! As you head to the next location, look it up in the Topical Guide and read all you can about that location. Make your own map glossary so you can refer back to it as you come across it again in your Come, Follow Me studies.
Walk and Do Activities- Pick which cities you want to walk to and which locations you will visit by doing an activity instead. Use the passport book to stamp the areas you’ve visited.
Use the overall map as you study Come, Follow Me. Fill it in with more details as you go!
Make a big goal with your family for the summer. Then pick smaller milestones along the way to keep everyone motivated, having fun, and learning a little about the Book of Mormon.
Use the activity ideas for each city to make your own land of the Nephites for a church activity. Decorate the rooms and set up one of the suggested activities in each room.
Once you get to your destination, celebrate! There are activity suggestions for each city that will help you celebrate. Each activity ties back into some of the events that have happened in that location. For example:
Play Jenga will my additional cards to mix it up a bit as you remember that King Benjamin spoke from a tall tower in Zarahemla.
Compete in the dot game to capture as many Lamanites as you can at Hill Cumorah.
Design your own city like Alma and his people did as they built Helam.
Battle it out using socks and more!
As you travel to each location, the goal is to help you become more familiar with these places and what significance they have in the Book of Mormon. As you read about the Lamanites attacking the city of Manti, it’s not just a name to you. You understand why they would attack Manti and its relationship to the rest of the land of the Nephites. Happy Trails!
