Questions to Ponder

Get the discussion going with some of these questions.

  • The Lord speaks to us personally through the gift of the Holy Ghost. How has that truth blessed your life so far? How do you hope it will continue to bless your life?

  • Why can’t we survive spiritually without the guiding influence of the Holy Ghost? Why is it so important? How has the Holy Ghost been your life preserver or lifeguard? How has the Holy Ghost stopped you from sinking?

  • What do we need to do in order to have the Holy Ghost with us as our CONSTANT companion?

  • The brothers, Nephi and Lehi, received many revelations each day! Do we believe that is possible today? Do we believe that with the help of the Holy Ghost, we can end the strife around us? If so, how does it affect the way we live?

  • What do we do to invite the Holy Ghost into our lives?

  • What does reviewing our lives for opportunities to repent look like to you? How does seeking these opportunities to repent help you?

  • When has the Holy Ghost testified to you of Jesus Christ and His church on earth today? How has that shaped you?

  • When have you received a prompting that you didn’t understand? How did you take courage and act on it anyway?

  • How can we strengthen our confidence in the Holy Ghost?

  • Why are you grateful for the gift of the Holy Ghost? What would life be like without it?

Discussion Ideas

  • President Eyring addressed his remarks to his posterity. What do you want your family to know about the gift of the Holy Ghost? What personal experiences would you share with them? You could ask a couple of people ahead of time (try different age groups or life situations) to share an experience where they were grateful to have the gift of the Holy Ghost. How did it bless them? How did they recognize it as the Spirit speaking to them? What would they want their family to remember the most from their experience? As people listen, encourage them to write down any impressions or stories that come to their mind so they can remember to share them with their families later.

  • When you have guests coming to stay in your home, what do you do to prepare? Make a bed, clean the bathroom, get food you know they can eat, etc. If we want the Holy Ghost to be constantly in our homes (and with us), what are doing to ensure the Spirit is comfortable living with us? How can you prepare to invite the Holy Ghost into your life every morning?

  • President Eyring mentioned the scripture stories of the brothers Nephi and Lehi as well as Nephi, the son of Lehi. What are some other scriptures stories that come to mind that demonstrate the blessing it is to have the Holy Ghost constantly with us? You can bring in several gospel pictures of these scripture stories and give them to different clusters of people to briefly discuss the stories and what they love about them when thinking about the role of the Holy Ghost in the story.

P.S. This talk goes well with Elder Gary E. Stevenson’s talk about the Holy Ghost as well, “Promptings of the Spirit.” Consider teaching them together with our additional teaching helps.
