A Nephite Christmas

While the Shepherds were visiting Jesus and the wise men following the star, the people in America rejoiced!

Long ago, a prophet named Samuel, who was a Lamanite, came to the people of Nephi and prophesied to them while on a wall. Read the rest of this story from the Book of Mormon- you can find the easy to read version here or turn to Helaman chapters 13-16 and read the chapter headings.

Some people believed the words of Samuel and continued to look for the sign. Others, however, did not. When those that did not believe remembered that it had been 5 years and still no sign, they decided to set a date whereby they would kill all the believers if the sign did not come. What would you do? Would you start to wonder or would you start to pray?

In 3 Nephi 1:10-13 we find out what one did,

"Now it came to pass that when Nephi, the son of Nephi, saw this wickedness of his people, his heart was exceedingly sorrowful.
"And it came to pass that he went out and bowed himself down upon the earth, and cried mightily to his God in behalf of his people, yea, those who were about to be destroyed because of their faith in the tradition of their fathers.
"And it came to pass that he cried mightily unto the Lord all that day; and behold, the voice of the Lord came unto him, saying:
"Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets."

That very night, it did not get dark. The new star appeared. The non believers fell to the earth in astonishment and the believers were filled with joy while others were converted that day.

Just as the prophets prophesied of Jesus' birth, the prophets prophesy that He will come again. Although we do not know when that will be, we are told to prepare for it. We can prepare for Christ's Second Coming just like the people of Zarahelma prepared for His birth.

What are some things that we can do now to prepare for His coming?

Praying and reading the scriptures daily, keeping our baptismal covenants, and following the prophet are some great ways to prepare now and stay prepared.

Optional Activities

Make this project to remind you of those daily things we should be doing to be ready. Also listen to the song, "Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus" (pg. 36 in the Children's Songbook).  Here's another fun activity to do earlier that day or with the devotional. There is also this coloring activity.
