Newel K. Whitney sacrificed much to build up The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a prosperous business man and gave generously. Even when he had to cover lots of Church debt, he didn’t falter. Here are some other fun facts about him that you won’t find on our printable sheet:
Whitney purchased the land on which the Kirtland temple was built (the Peter French farm).
Ann described her husband as “a young man [who] had come out West to ‘seek his fortune.’ He had thrift and energy, and he accumulated property faster than most of his … associates.”
Ann and N.K. had 14 children, 10 of which they were able to raise to adulthood.
He also owned an ashery nearby. An ashery converts ash into other useful products like lye and potash. These were important to produce soap, glass, and other products.
His store and ashery were essential parts of Kirtland’s economy and support for the temple.
When first called to move to Missouri, Newel hesitated as he would be giving up a lot of property and prosperity. The Lord chastised him in D&C 117:11. Newel quickly repented and moved to Missouri.
Hang your posters on the fridge so your family can’t miss it, bring them to your next church lesson as you tell stories and read verses about him, or print these two pages double sided then cut into puzzle pieces for your family to assemble and discover.
