Families are under constant pressure today- distractions, busyness, shifting values. That’s why it was so timely and powerful that in the October 2025 General Conference, Elder Ronald A. Rasband and President Dallin H. Oaks both delivered messages centered on the role of families in God’s eternal design. Our printable “General Conference Pecks of Truth: Family” sheet brings their messages side-by-side so you can see how beautifully their counsel connects and why it’s so important for us to remember.

Elder Rasband’s “The Family Proclamation – Words from God”

A few quick points from Elder Rasband’s talk includes:

  • Elder Rasband opens by reminding us that The Family: A Proclamation to the World is not a mere statement of ideals but doctrine. It is a revelation given by God’s servants to guide His children.

  • He recounts the Church’s history in presenting the proclamation, emphasizing that it was created in response to societal drift and confusion regarding family, gender, and relationships.

  • He highlights one of the core truths in the Proclamation: “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of … Jesus Christ.”

  • Elder Rasband also testifies that men and women have different but equal and essential roles, that “preside” does not mean dominate, and that “nurture” is not secondary.

President Oaks’ “The Family-Centered Gospel of Jesus Christ”

Some key points from President Oaks’ talk that you may want to revisit include:

  • President Oaks begins by situating family at the center of the doctrine of the Church: we were taught in a pre-mortal family, live in mortal families, and our ultimate destiny is to be in eternal families.

  • He reiterates that the Proclamation declares the family as ordained of God.

  • He encourages families to do meaningful things together such as gardening, learning languages, service, sharing family stories, creating traditions.

  • One of his most memorable lines: “To find time and turn the family on, many parents will find they can turn their family on if they all turn their technologies off.”

Our free one sheet review puts these two talks next to each other to help you study and teach the beautiful doctrine about family found in both. You can find the download button at the bottom of this post. Here are just a few ways you can put it to good use:

  • Church lessons - Compare the two talks, highlight key points, and discuss why these two apostles focused on the importance of families. Ask your class what other important points they might include on this sheet.

  • Personal or companionship study - Add notes and favorite quotes as you study each message.

  • Family Home Evening - Read a couple of the bullet points together, share examples from your own family, and talk about ways to live those principles daily.

At the bottom of the sheet, you’ll also find a Family “Would You Rather” Game, a lighthearted way to help your family apply what these prophets taught. Each question nudges families to talk, laugh, and make choices that build connection.

Questions to Ponder as You Study

You may also want to consider these questions as you study or teach from these two great talks:

  • What difference would it make in my life if I viewed the Family Proclamation not as advice, but as revelation from God?

  • Where in my home do I treat that counsel lightly? How can I show deeper reverence?

  • How can I better counsel and coordinate with my spouse (or family members) as equals working toward one purpose?

  • What behaviors do my children observe more than what I explicitly teach?

  • What technologies in our home consume more of our time or attention than they should?

  • If we turned all devices off for one evening per week, what would we do with that time?

  • What project or activity (gardening, writing family stories, learning a new language, home improvement) would help us grow closer?

  • How can we weave more sacred experiences (stories, testimonies, traditions) into our normal rhythms?

  • How do I want to be remembered by my posterity?

  • What divine patterns bring peace and stability to our homes?

  • How can our family better “teach by example”?

  • In what ways can our family live the Family Proclamation more intentionally this week?

  • What simple traditions or routines help us keep Christ at the center of family life?
