Experiment with Frosting Gospel Lesson

The frosting experiment will help you talk about building firm foundations as well as give you insights on what you want to use as you build your gingerbread house. The success of your creation depends on using the right frosting and constructing solid foundational walls. For this experiment, try three types of frosting: one that’s a bit too soft, one that’s just right, and one that’s so stiff it’s tough to spread.

We recommend using store-bought frosting for convenience- just mix in milk to soften or powdered sugar to stiffen it as needed. However, royal icing is often the go-to choice for gingerbread houses due to its sturdy texture. Use this quick test to decide which frosting works best for your masterpiece.

Start by guessing which frosting will perform the best and which might fall short. Then put each one to the test with three quick and easy builds- graham crackers are great for this. Don’t forget to check the strength by adding some heavier candies on to the crackers to see how well the frosting holds up to it.

As you experiment, consider these questions:

  • Which frosting is the easiest to work with?

  • Which frosting tastes the best?

  • Which color do you like the most?

  • If you put heavier candy on the roof, does the house stay intact?

  • Which frosting will you choose to build your own gingerbread house? Why?

Once you’ve tested them all, use the free printable discussion questions to connect your findings to building our testimonies on a firm foundation.

Build Your Gingerbread Houses

Before you start building your gingerbread houses, pick a theme! We’ve included several to draw from in our free printable kit. Themes make the process more fun, give direction to those who need a little inspiration, and help curb comparisons. We’ve noticed that inexperienced builders can sometimes feel discouraged if their house doesn’t look like someone else’s. Choosing unique themes helps everyone focus on creativity rather than comparison since the designs are meant to look different!

For your building surface, we recommend cutting pieces of cardboard and wrapping them in foil for a sturdy base. If you’re using paper plates, flip them upside down to avoid battling the rim as you build. A solid, flat surface makes a difference.

Get ready for some festive, stress-free fun that lets everyone shine in their own unique way.
