Discussion Questions

  • When have you experienced Christ’s love and help during your mistakes? How was He able to transform your mistakes for good?

  • How have you seen the Lord help you repair something you thought was unrepairable? How did it strengthen your faith and understanding of Christ’s Atonement?

  • How has repentance deepened your love for the Savior and helped you feel His love more clearly? Has there been ways you have changed because of repentance that you did not originally expect?

  • Because of the Savior’s Atonement, we can try again. What inspires you to keep trying when you feel it’s too late, you’re unworthy, or you’re tired of falling short?

  • How have you personally felt reborn as you have participated in sacred ordinances?

  • As you’ve reflected on the Atonement of Jesus Christ, what new insights or gratitude have come to your mind recently?

  • We often talk about the incomprehensible agony Christ endured, but it’s equally hard to grasp His ability to forgive us fully when we sincerely repent. How have you come to trust in the Savior’s forgiveness? What helps you seek repentance when feelings of unworthiness creep in? How can we encourage others who feel beyond the Savior’s reach?

  • What “weapons of war” might we unconsciously hold onto that block us from receiving God’s love? How can we better recognize when we need spiritual healing? What helps you take an honest look at your life?

  • Our need for help is the very reason Christ came to earth. How does this encourage you and help you keep an eternal perspective?

  • How can we shift from seeing ourselves as defective for repeating a sin to embracing a mindset of “more work is needed- keep going”? What helps you let go of feelings of inadequacy as you strive to overcome personal weaknesses?

  • What helps you see each day as full of hope and possibilities?

Teaching Ideas

  • How many of us have experienced something like Sister Yee did with her painting? (Encourage people to raise their hands so we can see that we aren’t alone.) You were nervous to start and a bit overwhelmed but started anyway. You poured your heart into it and so much time- sometimes finishing seemed impossible. But you did! You finished it, almost anyway, you just needed to do one last thing and then…. everything came apart. What did you do? Who did you call? Share one or two stories then share what Sister Yee did and a quote from her story such as “And I remember looking at the painting in the morning- it looked better than it did before. How as that possible? What I thought was a mistake without mend was an opportunity for His merciful hand to be manifest. He was not done with the painting, and He was not done with me.” What does Sister Yee’s story and those that shared stories teach you about Jesus Christ’s mercy?

  • Head to the scriptures as a class and look up scriptures and General Conference quotes that can encourage us to repent. Use the search feature in the Gospel Library app or try the Guide to the Scriptures or the Topical Guide under hope, Atonement, etc. Write the references on the board so people can record them and take them home. Try researching in small groups then sharing one or two with the class.

  • Try opening your lesson with a word association game where you say a word and your class writes down the first thing they think of when they hear it. Scratch paper from the library works well for this activity. Bury the word “repentance” at like number seven out of ten words so by that point your class is going with the flow and doesn’t overthink it. Here are ten words you might use: Prayer, Faith, Gospel, Jell-O, Potluck, Relief Society (or whatever class you are in), Repentance, Chocolate, Church, Christmas. After everyone writes their answers on a piece of paper, invite people to share what they wrote for repentance and why. If the overall response is positive, that’s fantastic! Roll with it and ask your class why they wrote the words they did. Why is repentance a joyful thing? If the overall response is negative or neutral, read this quote from President Russell M. Nelson (or one from Sister Yee) while holding up a picture of Jesus with His arm outstretched: “Too many people consider repentance as punishment—something to be avoided except in the most serious circumstances. But this feeling of being penalized is engendered by Satan. He tries to block us from looking to Jesus Christ, who stands with open arms, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen, purify, and sanctify us.” Remember it's Satan that doesn't want us to repent. Jesus Christ is opening his arms towards us, welcoming us in, helping us along the way through that repentance process.

  • Hang Sister Yee’s painting up as a visual throughout your lesson. You can print a copy from her General Conference talk. You could even cover the painting up with pieces of paper acting as puzzle pieces. Then as you talk about different key points from the talk, remove one piece. Once it’s fully uncovered, discuss the following quote from Sister Yee: “Let us not defend ourselves from the good that God desires to bless us with. From the love and mercy that He desires us to feel. From the light and knowledge He desires to bestow upon us. From the healing that He knows we so readily need. From the deeper covenant relationship He intends for all His sons and daughters.” How can we more fully receive all that God desires to bless us with?
