Land of Helam Activity Ideas
The people of Alma established this area after fleeing from King Noah (see Mosiah 23:1-20). Helam was the first person Alma baptized in the waters of Mormon (see Mosiah 18:12-14). If you were to build your own city, what would it look like? What would you name it? Use the free printable map templates to design your own city or get out some blocks. Share your design and why you made sure to include certain parts.
The Lamanites enslaved the people of Alma (see Mosiah 23:37-39). The Lord caused a deep sleep to come on the guards so they could sneak out of the city and escape bondage. Play Night at the Museum! One person is the museum guard while everyone else is a statue. Turn off the lights and give the guard a flashlight. For safety, you don’t want the room pitch black but dimmer than full light. Statues move when they think the guard can’t see them but if the guard catches them, they are out. The guard can try various antics to get the statues to move but cannot touch them including blowing on them.
The Lamanites were lost in the wilderness and asked the people of Helam for directions back home (see Mosiah 23:35-36). Pick a location that no one has been to yet. Safely race in teams to be the first ones to the new location. No devices allowed, only paper maps and word of mouth.
Print out our Book of Mormon map and see where it is in relation to other places in the Book of Mormon. Challenge your family to walk from the land of Helam to another Book of Mormon land. Keep in mind, these are all rough estimates. It can be a neat way to combine those spiritual and physical goals. The pioneers roughly walked 11 miles a day when crossing the plains with a herd of animals, women, and children. We rounded up to about 15 miles a day for speedier travel.
It took the people of Alma 12 days to get to Zarahemla (see Mosiah 24:25). We estimate that to be about 130-180 miles (about 209-290 km) since they also took their flocks with them.
To get to the land of Nephi it would take 8 days or about 120 miles (about 193 km)
It would take about 2 days or 35 miles (56 km) to get to Amulon.
