Discussion Questions

There is so much to reflect on in President Nelson’s October 2024 General Conference talk. Here are a few questions to help you study and discuss his message further with others.

  • Now is the time to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. President Nelson emphasized temple worship as a key to preparation. What are some other ways you are striving to be prepared for the Second Coming? Have you changed your routines or the way you approach your dailies to better prepare? Why are you looking forward to the Second Coming? How might we prepare as a ward family?

  • President Nelson invited us to make our discipleship a top priority. What are some things you're already doing that help with this? How might we tweak other things in our lives to ensure being a disciple of Jesus Christ is our priority?

  • At the start of his talk, President Nelson urged us to study the General Conference messages and use them as a "litmus test" for the next six months. What methods do you use to study Conference? Are there any specific truths from this Conference that resonate with you and feel crucial for the coming days?

  • President Nelson taught that temples help prepare a people who will prepare the world for the Second Coming. How have you seen this in your own life? How do we contribute to preparing the world, and what might that look like in practical terms? Note: Other General Conference talks are a great answer to this question. For example, President Oaks’ talk about being peacemakers and following Christ’s example.

  • The world is full of distractions that can pull us away from focusing on discipleship and preparing for the Savior’s return. What are some ways you've noticed these distractions in your life, and how do you overcome them? How can we recognize when we’re off track and quickly realign?

  • In what ways has choosing to follow Jesus Christ simplified other decisions in your life?

  • President Nelson urged us to dedicate time each week to deepening our understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. How do you plan to follow this counsel? What have you been prompted to study, and how has this focus blessed your life so far?

  • President Nelson extended several other invitations in his talk. What other ones stood out to you? How have you strived to act on them? How can we embrace these invitations without feeling overwhelmed and give up?

Teaching Ideas

  • Dive into the scriptures and accept the prophet’s invitation to deepen our understanding of Christ’s Atonement during class time. Divide into groups for discussion or simply hand out different reading assignments based on where people are sitting and let them study on their own. We’ve got a list of study resources to help you plus free printable study pages.

  • Give everyone in your class one index card to write down one quote they enjoyed from General Conference on one side then on the back write a short explanation of what that quote means to them (no more than 5 sentences). Be sure they write down who said it! Classes can use these cards each week as part of counsel together time or scan them all into a pdf file and share the resource with everyone in your class to use as they study the messages these next six months. It’s a neat way to gain new perspectives. Looking for more ways to study General Conference? We’ve got several!

  • One of the invitations President Nelson gave us was to talk, testify, have faith in, and rejoice in Jesus Christ. Spend some class time doing just that- invite others to share their testimonies of Jesus Christ for a few minutes during your lesson or at the end to finish on a strong spiritual note. You could also break into smaller groups so more people have the opportunity to do so.

  • Listen to the beautiful music that was sung after President Nelson’s talk. It’s from Handel’s Messiah and was requested specifically by him. It can be a great way to end your lesson as well as to begin it. Afterwards you can again quote the same part as President Nelson did, “when Jesus Christ returns, ‘the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.’” Then ask a discussion question such as “How are we preparing for the Lord’s Second Coming?”.

  • The parable of the 10 virgins is a great scripture story to tie in and discuss how we are filling our lamps. It’s found in Matthew 25.
