Teaching Ideas

Dig a little deeper with these teaching ideas.

  • Write D&C 84:20 on the board then start with an object lesson using a flashlight and some batteries. The flashlight can represent the ordinances and the batteries reflect our willingness to keep the covenants we make. As we participate in ordinances and keep our covenants, we create light or God’s power. What are some other meanings you can see in this object lesson? How can partaking of the sacrament each week increase God’s power in our lives? In what way is the power of God manifest in the ordinances?

  • Split into groups or individual study and read D&C 25 again as Sister Freeman did. What additional insights do you see this time? What are some things Sister Freeman pointed out? Do her insights help you make additional connections? What blessings did you gain as you studied it when President Russell M. Nelson invited us a few years back? What are some of the things required of each of us to access God’s power as stated in D&C 25? How can we be like Emma and not just stare out the window and wonder but act?

  • Sing or listen to some hymns Emma Smith helped compile or some from the new hymn book. Thumb through some we sing before we partake of the sacrament, sing ones that talk about blessings from the covenants we make in the temple like “Families Can Be Together Forever”, etc. How does singing a hymn each week before the sacrament help you prepare? What truths can we learn from these hymns? How might we use them to help us live up to our privilieges?
