Get ready for a fun and meaningful challenge with our "Who Said It?" game! This activity will put your memory to the test as we recall inspiring quotes from the recent General Conference talks. Whether you're playing with family, friends, or a church class, it's a great way to reflect on the words of our prophets and leaders. But first, we’ll see how well you know each other with our fun questionnaire. Read on for all the details.
Save it for later, pin it now!
This is a three part activity! First you’ll challenge each other by seeing if you can correctly guess each other’s responses to the questionnaire. Then you’ll see how many speakers you can identify by their quotes. Lastly, discuss how we can better recognize the Lord’s voice in our lives.
Who Said It? Part 1
This part is all about recognizing each other's unique voices. Here’s how it works:
Fill Out the Questionnaire: Everyone starts by filling out a questionnaire sheet, using complete sentences. The answers should be fun and thoughtful!
Cut and Mix: Once everyone has finished, cut the answers apart, fold them up, and toss them into a bowl. Mix the slips well to keep things mysterious.
Guess the Voices: Draw one slip at a time and read it aloud. Can everyone guess who wrote it? You can either play just for fun, with everyone guessing together, or turn it into a competition.
Scoring (optional): Award 5 points for each correct guess. If two people claim the same answer (because they wrote something similar), each gets 2 points for a correct claim.
Tips
Add Names or Keep it Mysterious: You can choose to have everyone write their name under each answer or leave it anonymous until the correct person claims it after it’s read.
If you aren’t planning to read all the answers in one sitting (it can be a lot!), ask each person to place their cut-up answers in their own glass. Gather the glasses, hide them in a box, and shuffle them a bit so no one knows whose answers you’re drawing from. Then, draw one slip from each glass so everyone gets a turn.
Who Said It? Part 2
Now it’s time to see if we can remember some of the recent words from our prophets and leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This activity is even more fun if you can play short audio clips from their recent messages- sometimes hearing their voice gives it away and sometimes it makes it harder! Here’s how to play:
Gather Your Quotes: We recommend at least 10 quotes from recent General Conference talks to share with your family or church class. Remember to write down the time stamps if you want to play the audio clip.
Read or play the quotes and challenge everyone to guess who said it. They can use their notebooks from General Conference to help jog their memories or reference the titles of the talks (use this free printable for October 2024). You can also make it easier by offering multiple choice options.
Again, you can play friendly by everyone guessing at once together or mark it down on their answer sheets. Each correct answer is 10 points.
Alternate Ways to Play
Skip reading the quotes outloud and make a matching worksheet instead with the quotes on one side and possible speakers on the other side.
Invite your class to take a few minutes to write down one or two quotes from General Conference that resonated with them. Make sure they include who said it! To get a wider variety of quotes, you can assign each group to focus on a specific session of Conference. Once everyone is done, collect the cards and read each quote aloud, challenging the group to guess who said it. The person who wrote the quote can’t answer, of course! After the correct answer is guessed, invite the writer to share why they chose that quote or to expand on its meaning in their own words.
No matter how you play, it’s a fun way to revisit and remember the inspired messages shared during General Conference.
Tally points from both parts and declare a winner! We’ve included some award “buttons” you can tape onto shirts in our free printable. Attach a treat instead for extra fun.
The Most Important Part
Remember to bring it all home by discussing the important concepts that tie all these activities together. Learning to recognize each other’s and our leader’s words is at step toward learning to recognize the voice of the Lord. President Russell M. Nelson declared in October 2020, “Our Father knows that when we are surrounded by uncertainty and fear, what will help us the very most is to hear His Son.” We hear the Lord as we listen to the words of His prophets. We hear Him as we ponder the scriptures. We hear Him as we take time to be still. How do you hear Him? We’ve included some discussion questions and scriptures you can use with your group in the free printable. Here are a few highlights:
How were you able to recognize the different voices of those in your group? What can you do to become more familiar with the prophet’s words and the promptings of the Holy Ghost?
In Helaman 13-15, Samuel the Lamanite warned the people and prophesied of Christ’s birth and death. Modern prophets echo his message (see D&C 1:4-5) and help us prepare for Christ’s Second Coming. What recent counsel or warnings have you heard from our prophet? How can we better follow his guidance in our lives?
In 3 Nephi 11:3-8, Heavenly Father speaks to the Nephites. However, it took three times before they could understand what He was saying. What did the Nephites need to do in order to hear His words? How can we open our ears to hear the Lord better? What things might be blocking us from understanding? Note: “Hearing” can happen with more than just our ears.
How has God’s words quieted your fears and brought comfort and joy to you?
