Struggling to teach your family how and why to prepare for General Conference? As parents, we’ve learned to love General Conference because we’ve learned to do the prep work and how to listen with spiritual ears. Help your children understand the difference between watching General Conference and soaking it all up with this fun object lesson.
Save it for later, pin it now!
Can you taste it?
Grab a pack of Skittles and some blindfolds. We recommend enough blindfolds for everyone to participate at the same time. You will probably only need one bag of Skittles.
Everyone except the monitor puts on their blindfold and holds out their hand. Yes, you can just close your eyes but it’s so tempting to look so it’s better to use blindfolds.
The monitor puts one of the same color of Skittles in everyone’s hands.
Now everyone plugs their noses and starts to eat their Skittle. Don’t eat it all yet though!
Everyone takes a guess as to what flavor/color it is.
Next, invite everyone to unplug their noses and guess again.
The difference is very noticeable! Most of the time, they will get the color wrong the first time. Once they unplug their noses though, it’s a burst of flavor. Go ahead, try it again.
We taste with more than the taste buds on our tongues. Our sense of smell has a big impact on how we enjoy our food. That’s why when we are stuffed up, food doesn’t taste as good.
What does this have to do with General Conference?
If we aren’t using all our senses while listening, we are missing out! Just like plugging our noses blocked the flavor of the Skittles, when we don’t tune into General Conference spiritually ready, we are missing so much!
How do we make sure we are showing up with ears to really hear what the Lord wants to tell us? We have to prepare beforehand. Share some of your favorite ways to prepare with your family and brainstorm together (like coming with a question). Discuss ways you can help each other prepare, for example, adding it to your family’s prayers. If you need some ideas, check out these 5 great ways to prepare yourself to receive revelation during General Conference.
We get out of General Conference what we are willing to put in. When we simply show up and listen, it’s a great start but we miss out on a lot of the goodness. As we prepare, we learn what works best for us and taste General Conference on a whole new level. As we open our hearts and minds, we begin to realize just how much God is trying to tell us. It really is a noticeable difference.
Write that Inspiration Down
Once you learn how to better tune into the Spirit, write down those impressions! Not only can this simple act lead to more inspiration, you’ll thank yourself later. Satan is constantly trying to make us believe lies- including messing with your mind about what you did and didn’t hear. As you record the truth in the moment, you have a reliable record you can refer back to and remember what God actually told you.
Our General Conference Notebooks give you lots of space to record what’s important plus coloring and activities to help you stay focused and awake all weekend long. Print one at home now or let us ship it to you.
May your next General Conference experience be truly delicious!
