Shout Out for Latter-day Saints is a fun game for your next family night or church activity! It’s quick to learn and easy to play. In fact, it’s such a blast, I’m always looking for more ways to use it. You'll love playing Shout Out too. Play it as intended- guessing the 10 key words based on a topic, or try one of the great variations below.

Save it for later, pin it now!

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Pick out the cards that have to do with the church building such as “In a Relief Society Room” or “Found Outside a Church.” Split up into teams and give them their own set of cards. Each team documents all their findings and races to be the first to finish. Pssst… I use this hunt idea when we have to be at church extra early… we play it cooperatively so it doesn’t bother anyone. Need something more reverent? Get out your scriptures instead and use all the cards related to the scriptures like “Book of Mormon Heroes” or “Animals in the Scriptures.” Find each one in the scriptures (indexes don’t count) then cross them off the list. How many cards can you complete in 5 minutes?

Roll the Dice

Everyone needs their own card in this game- they don’t need to be the same- and their own pair of dice. Each person rolls the dice as fast as possible, picking one or the sum of both dice and writes the corresponding answer on a piece of paper. The goal is to write down all 10 answers first. Already have that answer written down on your list? You have to count out loud to the sum of both dice before rolling again. Take it another step further by adding an element of the game of Spoons- place enough spoons in the middle minus one person. Grab a spoon when you are done or if you see someone else grab a spoon. If you don't get a spoon, you are out. The last one standing wins.

Getting pied in the face after playing LDS Shout Out: The Duel!

The Duel (Shown in the video)

Two people face off in this fun version. Place a pie pan filled with whipped cream in the middle of both players. Pick a cardholder for each person. Cards need to be similar in difficulty but not the same so they can't steal answers from each other. On "Go", they each try to shout out all the answers the fastest they can. When they get all of them, the cardholder turns their card around to indicate completion then the winner grabs the pan and pies the other guy in the face. Be sure to have some towels around for clean up!

Story Time

Pick out cards that you feel comfortable changing into fictional stories like “Things You Do After Church” or “Found in Your Food Storage.” Everyone rolls a pair of dice three times (pick one number or use the sum). Those three things are now what they must use to tell a story- pick them all from one card or use a different card for each roll. Change it to a passing group story where you roll once it's your turn to pick up the story. Once you used one of your words and completed the sentence, it's the next person's turn. End the story when everyone has gone three times.

Paper telephone

Everyone needs a Shout Out card, a piece of paper, and something to write with. Roll the dice to see which word you start with on your paper. Remember to also write your name at the top so you can recognize it when it comes back around. If you are playing with even numbers, write the word at the top of the page, fold it over so no one can see the word, draw the word then pass it on. If you have odd numbers, write the word and pass it on.

Obstacle course

Make a fun obstacle course where at the halfway point, there is a scripture-based Shout Out card. Each person has to stop, find any unclaimed word in the scriptures, bookmark it, then cross it off on the card before moving on. The team that finds all the words and finishes the course the fastest wins. Judges should check the bookmarks.

Mystery Menu Style

Add some mystery to your dinner! Assign foods, utensils, drinks, etc. to different numbers. Then give each person a chance to shout out answers to their own unique card. The numbers that correspond to their answers determines what they will get for dinner. Cut it off at three or let them guess until they can't think of any more answers or they have guessed them all. The fun part is not even knowing what numbers you got so you don’t know if you and your neighbor will be getting the same things or something completely different.

Prizes (good and bad) for playing LDS Shout Out: Is It Worth the Risk?

Is It Worth the Risk?

Gather ten different items and number them one to ten. Some of the items should be neat rewards like $5, soda, a small toy, etc. Others should be not so great like whipped cream in the face, the gross tasting jelly beans, 10 push-ups (write it on a notecard), something super sour, etc. Announce the Shout Out topic then give each person one chance to guess an answer. Whatever number corresponds with their answer is the prize they get. They can get in line again or choose to sit out until the next round. No one is allowed to repeat answers or you can switch to a new card with each person.
