The Instant Talent Show Gospel Fun Kit makes it easy to put on a talent show. Simply print, hang, and go! You may need a couple of extra supplies like a book, spoon, and a ball but nothing crazy. You should be able to find everything at home already. Each leaf has a different talent to try- some more silly than others. Use it as a family, do it virtually, or use it for a children’s or youth activity night!
Talent Show Tips
Some people love being in a talent show while it’s another’s nightmare. Help everyone participate and have fun with some of these tips:
If you have a larger group, consider breaking into smaller groups so there is plenty of time for everyone to participate and it’s not as high pressure.
Instead of having everyone perform on their own, start off paired up or in small groups and warm up to individual talents. Groups make it easier for those that wouldn’t normally volunteer to be in a talent show. Everyone can go a few times as each talent doesn’t take long to do. As you progress, consider giving the option of pairing up or doing it individually.
After you’ve been through everyone once, give the option of picking a new leaf or doing one that’s already been done (as long as it’s not one they have done before). This helps relieve some pressure for those more nervous and makes it more fun for everyone. When I did this with a group of Primary girls for an Activity Night, there were a few coveted talents that everyone wanted to try. It was fun to see everyone’s take on it.
Want to give people a little more time to prep? Let everyone choose a leaf at the beginning. Give them 5 minutes to prep then start the show!
Get some energetic cheerleaders and an awesome MC on board with you. The reactions of the audience help set the tone for your Talent Show. When one or two people start laughing, congratulating people, clapping, etc. others will join in. It’s contagious! If you are doing this as a family, try to enlist one of your children instead of your spouse. It means more coming from a nonparent.
Watch for those that love to perform. They can really help get the energy going in the beginning but you’ll have to keep them from taking over in the end. It’s all about balance. Give them time to shine and have fun while allowing others to be involved too.
Play some music in between acts as they prepare to help keep the energy high and give people time to think about what they will be doing.
End it with a bang! It can be more fun to split into two bigger groups at the end and each group does one final talent together.
Use the treat tags to present everyone with a job well-done award.
Host It Virtually
This is a fun activity to do over a conferencing app like Zoom. You can still hang the leaves up behind you but put numbers on the backs so each person just picks a number when it’s their turn to go. You can still do it in groups too- give them a few minutes to talk amongst themselves to coordinate and decide which number to pick. You will want to pick the leaves that don’t require extra props or tell people which items to have on hand just in case.
Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical, and Emotional Goals
And who knows? You may just find a hidden talent that you want to continue to develop. It’s a great way to tie in the Children’s and Youth Program from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You can show how some of the talents you performed tie into the emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and physical goals. Use the Talent Development Goal Sheet to make a plan to develop your talents more. And you can continue to discuss the importance of talents with the included Discussion Questions.
