Potatoes have climbed the popularity scales once again. Have you gone trick or treating and been offered a potato yet? People love them. Potatoes are meme-worthy, an excellent comfort food, and well, fun (hello, Mr. Potato)! A few months back, I asked my 12 year old son to add something uplifting to our home’s message board. What did he write? “Potatoes and Jesus.” I told him if he could give me a good reason, we'd keep it. Here's what he said: “Because life is better with them.” Can’t argue with that! Thus our love for the combination of Jesus and potatoes was born and with that a whole slew of interesting insights.
Save it for later, pin it now!
Potato Gospel Lesson
How many ways can you cook a potato? Go ahead, name a few. Ask your family. Here’s just a few ways we came up with:
Boiled- keep them simple with just a little bit of seasoning, mash them up for creamy mashed potatoes, or chill them for a potato salad.
Baked- whether it’s the traditional side dish, the twice-baked deliciousness, or the fancy hasselback; you’ll love these potatoes.
Fry them (in oil or air) and it’s a whole new ball game with french fries, hash browns, home fries, and potato chips.
Roast potatoes instead with a variety of seasonings and you have one of our favorite side dishes.
Grill them for a smoky taste and crispy texture.
Steam with herbs for a healthier side.
Stuff potatoes for incredible dishes like cottage potatoes (a family favorite dinner).
Thinly slice them and layer with cream or cheese then bake until bubbly and golden for amazing scalloped or au gratin potatoes.
Turn them into a soup! Potato soup is great in itself but you can add potatoes to other soups for extra creaminess.
You can even make pancakes out of them. Hello latkes!
Mash potatoes then mix with flour to create dough for dumplings or gnocchi.
Turn them into waffles for a crispy treat.
Potatoes are a go to for casseroles. Combine eggs, cheese, and hashbrowns for a breakfast casserole or meat and veggies with potatoes for dinner.
You can even make bread and rolls with potatoes. They give it a nice soft and moist texture.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! You could eat a different potato recipe every day for a month. The point being, there are endless possibilities to cook just one potato. And it’s a potato!
We, on the other hand, are literally God’s children. We surely have more to offer than a potato. We have so much potential- divine potential! And unlike potatoes, we get to make choices. Think of the possibilities!
Just like you don’t have to cook a potato the same way every day, we each have unique gifts and strengths. We don’t need to compare a french fry with stuffed potatoes. They are each different and wonderful. We too don’t need to compare ourselves to others. We each have our own unique path to take. The only opinion we need to worry about is God’s.
Enjoy some potato dishes and share this comparison with your family! Do you have a favorite potato dish? Now onto the best part.
Life is definitely better with Jesus Christ. He is the reason we have joy, we can live together with our families forever, we can repent and be redeemed. Jesus Christ gives us everything. We could live without potatoes but we certainly don’t want to live without the Savior in our lives. He is the reason we have hope, courage, comfort, the reason we have motivation to make the world a better place. Christ helps us love one another and become so much more. Similar to how we can take a potato and transform it into yummy delights, Jesus can transform us into so much more than we can even imagine.
President Russell M. Nelson put it this way, “God so loved the world that He sent His Only Begotten Son to help us. And His Son, Jesus Christ, gave His life for us. All so that we could have access to godly power- power sufficient to deal with the burdens, obstacles, and temptations of our day.”
As we look to and follow Jesus Christ, we are better. Our Redeemer helps us see more clearly and gives us power to endure and accomplish much good as we make and keep sacred covenants. President Nelson continued, “There is nothing easy or automatic about becoming such powerful disciples. Our focus must be riveted on the Savior and His gospel. It is mentally rigorous to strive to look unto Him in every thought. But when we do, our doubts and fears flee.”
So we try with all our might to look to Christ and we boldly proclaim that life is better with Him. Potatoes are an added bonus. Remember this message with a fun water bottle sticker or cozy hoodie. They can remind you to look to Jesus for life is better with Him.
More Faith and Potatoes
We discovered a movie that proves potatoes and faith go together. It’s called, Faith Like Potatoes. It’s about a farmer in South Africa whose faith is tried. We love inspirational faith movies in our home and have this one on our “To Watch” list.
