What a beautiful reminder of the importance of hope in our lives from Elder Neil L. Andersen. In his October 2025 General Conference talk, “The Triumph of Hope”, he reminds us that hope is a living gift. It can not be darken as we hold to our covenants. Teaching Ideas
Ponder for a moment the difference between feeling hopeless and having hope. When we feel hopeless, what are some things can remind us of the hope that really is available through Jesus Christ? What promises has Christ made that can be an anchor for us when we feel hopeless? Are there scriptures, hymns, or spiritual practices that bring you back to a place of hope? Make a list on the board of some practical ways we can find and keep hope in our daily lives such as focusing on gratitude by making a daily list or engaging in meaningful prayers every morning. Invite your class to take a picture if they want of your list to remember later. Emphasize that hope isn’t just an emotion; it’s a choice and a perspective grounded in Christ’s love and covenants. Remind them that even when hope feels distant, it can be reignited through small, intentional actions and a continued reliance on the Savior.
Read and discuss 2 Nephi 31:20. Our hope can be perfect and bright when it is centered in Christ who is perfect and His Atonement. How does your hope in Christ motivate you to continue forward and endure to the end? How does your hope carry you? What else can we learn from this verse?
The symbol of the Christmas star is a great reminder of hope. The Shepherds and the Wise men followed the star to Jesus. What are some other symbols of hope that are used in the scriptures? How do they help us look to Jesus? Look up the word “hope” in the Topical Guide and Guide to the Scriptures. What are some other words often used with hope? What can this teach us?
Hold up a mirror to the class and invite each person to look at themselves in it. What do you see? Probably some of your faults along with your good traits. If we only see ourselves in our own eyes we miss so much! For example, invite one friend to tell another friend in the class what they see when they look at that person. Now imagine what God sees in you. How can hope change the way we view ourselves and our future? How does remembering how God sees us give us hope?
Create some hopeful affirmations together based on Elder Andersen’s talk as well as scripture verses (such as Romans 15:13 or Ether 12:4). For example, “Every day I press forward forward with a perfect brightness of hope for I know God keeps His promises.” Give a copy of these affirmations to your presidency or secretary so they can send them out in an email to everyone.
