It’s amazing what a difference the right pen or coloring tool can do. As you write notes from inspired leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with a pen that flows at just the perfect speed. Ah, it’s beautiful. Discover our favorite writing and coloring tools for General Conference weekend below.

Pens for Notetaking

We love a pop of color but also the beautiful flow of a black gel pen. Color helps organize notes a bit and highlight key parts when you go back and review. We like to take notes while watching General Conference live in one color than use a different color when we go back and read the talk for the first time, third time, etc.

Felt Tip Pens

We’ve tried a lot of them. Some brands tend to run out of ink quicker or they don't have the right tip- either too big or too small. We like to be able to write clearly (too thick and it ends up looking like a blob) but still color in our General Conference Notebooks without it feeling like a pen.

When it comes to pen thickness, ink fill, and price, our favorite is the Amazon Basic Felt Tip Pens. We found we liked it more than the brand names and enjoyed the savings. We’ve bought these over and over again through the years. We recommend the 12 pack, not the 24 though. The 24 pack tends to have a LOT of pink, and well, we don’t need that much pink.

Gel Pens

We love how ink flows out of gel pens. They just make writing more fun. However, you want the ink to dry fast enough that you don’t smear the next line. Our through the year favorite black and blue gel pen has easily been the brand Uni-ball. They have several different thicknesses and colors but we always return to the black and blue ones with fine or medium tips. When you know you’ll be taking a lot of notes, like with a talk from President Russell M. Nelson, go with the fine point.

Coloring Tools

Now if you want to level up your coloring game, check out these amazing tools.

Crayons

Nothing beats a Crayola crayon. The other brands just can’t compare in quality and color. Our absolute favorite buy has been the Crayola Ultimate Crayon Box Collection. That’s 152 crayons in a handy dandy carrying case plus crayon sharpener. We bought this back in 2018 and still use it today. The glitter and metallic ones have been disappointing as they really don’t color that way but it’s still been worth it for the rest. We recommend just swapping those ones out.

Carry these crayons to the table to use with one of our giant coloring posters then transport it to the living room to color your favorite General Conference Bingo board.

Markers

Again, we’re Crayola lovers. So much so we bought the giant classroom box of Crayola markers because we didn’t want to run out. LOL. Some people love the Super Tips but not us. If you want to color with a thick marker, we recommend that you use a thick marker as it has more ink than the Super Tips do. Markers allow you to really kick up the fun a notch with scents and glitter that actually shows. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Big box of thick markers - we love the variety of colors and they last a while.
  • Big box of thin markers - yep, we'd get both.
  • Glitter markers- these are so much fun to use. Do NOT use an off brand as those tend to leak everywhere. We recommend these once your children understand how to press gently. Just a little takes your coloring project tp the next level.
  • Metallic markers- My boys wouldn't use the glitter ones but they LOVED the metallic ones. They are easier to use than the glitter ones but don't come in as many colors.
  • Silly Scents- We know there is another brand that is more known for scented markers but we absolutely love the Root Beer scent in this pack from Crayola. Watch out for colored noses!

Washable markers are fantastic to have around the house at all times. When you laminate our Conference Bingo boards you can use the washable markers to cross off your squares then wipe it off again.

Colored Pencils

We’re breaking from tradition here and recommend Prismacolor colored pencils instead- especially if you have a budding artist in your mix. They color so much better. The catch here is there seems to be a difference between the ones in a box versus the ones in a tin. We recommend the tin ones as you they blend.

We do, however, like the Crayola watercolor pencils. There are several different ways you can use them to get a neat watercolor effect without all the fuss. It's great way to make any coloring page more fun.

Some Flash

If you’re looking for eye appeal straight out of the gate, try our stackable crayon. Kids and adults LOVE these. It’s easy to use a bunch of different colors (12) and it’s just fun. They do not color as well as a Crayola crayon but they sure are fun.
