Questions to Ponder

Thanks to the volunteer who submitted these questions- it’s so helpful! Sign up to help with questions for the next session!

  • Were you named after anyone? Why were you given your name? Why is it significant to you and your family?

  • What comes to your mind when remember we have taken upon us the name of Jesus Christ when we were baptized?

  • What can you do to make sure you receive the name of Jesus Christ?

  • Did you accept President Russell M. Nelson’s invitation to read the Book of Mormon and mark where it talks about Christ? What impact did your participation have on you?

  • President Nelson also said to be intentional about talking about Jesus Christ with our families and others. How can you talk kindly of Christ and use His name in a loving way that others will notice and want to be around you?

  • Are you a “part-time disciple” or a “relaxed Mormon”? What can you do to make sure you are a true disciple from Sunday morning to Saturday night?

  • What does it mean to write Christ’s name on your heart?

  • How can you honor the names that you have taken upon yourself?

  • How does understanding the names you have been given effect the way you view yourself and therefore act?

  • How does understanding that we all have taken upon us the name of Christ change the way we work with and view each other?

Discussion Ideas

  • Discuss some origins of names. You can ask your class how they received their names as well as talk about some of the meanings of the names giving in the scriptures. For example, you can look up Abraham in the Bible Dictionary and find out his name means “Father of a multitude.” His original name, Abram means “exalted father.” Why do you think names have such a significance? How can we honor our names as well as others?

  • Bring pictures or draw on the board several things that have the name of the Savior on them such as a Church building, the temple, a missionary name tag, then have a picture of yourself or a group of the people in your classroom. What do each of these things have to do with Jesus Christ? How do each of these things honor the name of the Savior?

  • List off several various names from the scriptures and throughout Church History. You can have your class vote with thumbs up or down or have a few say what that name makes them think of. Discuss how these names give us meaning without any other further explanation. What do we think about when we hear the name “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”? How can we honor this name? If someone were to say our name, what would they think of?

  • Discuss several of the names of Jesus Christ. You can hand out names to different people in your class and ask them to present the name, what it means to them, and put it on the board. If we are to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ, what does that mean for us personally? Point to each name and ask, “How can we be like a Prince of Peace? What does that look like in our daily lives?” This Names of Christ Advent Devotional has several names to discuss and you can use it at Christmas.
