Gospel Tie In

Whenever you assemble your Time Capsule, you can always tie it back into Moroni burying the gold plates. Moroni first found a very safe spot to keep the records secure for a very long time. Read the description of the place the records were kept in Joseph Smith- History 1:51-52. Where would be a good place to keep your Time Capsule? After you decide as a family talk about why the records Moroni buried were worth preserving. How has the Book of Mormon been valuable to your family? Read and discuss Mormon 7:8-10; 8:12-22 and 9:31-37. What would be of great worth to you when you open your Time Capsule in the future?

(And, of course, you could tie in a great temple and family history lesson with this too!)

Once you have filled out the questionnaire think about other things you might want to include. Knowing how long it will be until you open it again will help you decide what is valuable enough to include but not too valuable to do without.

Other things to add to your Time Capsule:

  • Photos- family, friends, your home, your bedroom, vehicle, favorite spot to go for a walk, etc.

  • Use a string to measure everyone, taping off how tall each person. Write their name on the tape and fold up the string. You can compare when you open it.

  • Artwork you don’t want to throw away but you aren’t hanging up either.

  • Letters to each other

  • Facts about the year and how they make you feel

  • A card explaining everything in the capsule.

  • A page with everyone’s signatures

  • Any other little things that you won’t mind missing for a while and won’t get gross over the years

Tips for Storing Your Time Capsule

  • Store everything in an airtight, waterproof container. You don’t want anything getting in!

  • Put a reminder on your phone when to open it again AND where you stored it. Take a photo of it and attach it to your reminder so you remember what your Time Capsule looks like.

  • Write down in several places where and when to open your capsule! Tell your Google Mini, Alexa, your spouse’s phone, your journal, etc. The best part of Time Capsules is opening them up again.

  • You don’t have to bury it for it to count. Put it a Tupperware on a basement shelf or the top shelf in your closet you never use.

  • Turn it digital instead. Scan all your pages back in and create files for everything. Add some family photos, a video message, a photo of the newspaper that day, etc. Name your file “Open on YOUR DATE.”
