Easter and the First Vision (and Restoration) has long been something that I love celebrating together since they both took place in the spring. It’s even more exciting as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the First Vision in 2020. Use this Restoration Egg Hunt to remind your family of some of the blessings and knowledge we have today because of the Restoration of the Gospel.
Save it for later, pin it now!
The idea is to hide the Restoration Easter eggs for your family to find then talk about what each egg symbol represents. “Talk about” can mean 10 seconds or 10 minutes depending on your family’s ages and needs. There are lots of fun ways you can do this egg hunt too!
Ways to Use the Restoration Egg Hunt
Egg Someone’s Yard- This is where you fill up all the plastic eggs with treats and the Restoration Egg printables. Then you head to someone’s house, hide or leave the eggs all over the yard. Then stick the sign in letting them know what you did and run away! Lots of fun and an easy way to bring smiles to people’s faces. The Egged sign is included in the Small Egg Kit printable (see the bottom of this post to print).
Go on an Egg Scavenger Hunt- This one needs some preparation first. You can hide any sized Restoration eggs throughout your house or neighborhood. Give your family clues as to where to look for the next one until they find them all.
Get the Neighbors Involved- If you are worried about leaving eggs out in random places in the neighborhood, try getting your neighbors involved instead. Ask several friends and neighbors to put a Restoration Egg in one of their windows or on their porch. Then go for a walk using my Easter Hunt sheet to make sure your family finds them all!
Play Restoration Egg Bingo- If you have some younger children that won’t make it to all 9 eggs, try to find enough to get a Bingo instead. There are three boards you can use in the larger egg printable and one board in the smaller egg printable. You can hide the eggs around your house instead too!
Eggs for Easter Morning- You can also add these to your traditional Easter egg hunts. Just stick them in with the treats. When they open up their eggs, talk about it for a minute or encourage your children to color the eggs and discuss them later in the day.
Photo Hunts- Can’t leave your house? Gather a group of friends online and assign them a specific egg. Each person hides their assigned egg in the background of a photo they take. Then everyone shares all their photos with each other and all the families try to find where all the eggs are in the photos. See if you can find the Book of Mormon egg in the photo above.
Photo Scavenger Hunt- Send your older kids out in teams with a specific boundary of where to look in the neighborhood. Each team races to take a photo of where every Restoration Egg is first.
Level Up Photo Hunt- Similar to the Photo Hunt above but you make it harder for the youth. Instead of using my paper eggs, each person finds an object that can represent their assigned egg. Then the others have to figure out what the object is based on the theme given to them. For example, in the photo below, my theme is the temple egg. I could give a clue like, “Find something that represents the temple. And no, I’m not talking about a book.” In this case, it’s a temple recommend holder that has a picture of the Angel Moroni on it.
Excited to do your hunt now?! I even included a cute little paper basket you can use to put all the eggs in. It’s patterned after a basket you might find in the Book of Mormon times instead of an Easter basket today. As you discover each egg, you can share what we have because Joseph Smith went to a grove and prayed to find out the truth. Then later as he shared his story and was persecuted for it, Joseph Smith never backed down. He continued forward, translated the Book of Mormon, and organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What Each Restoration Egg Can Represents
Each egg can represent many things but here are so ideas to get you going:
Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove- God answers prayers, knows who we are, etc.
Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ in the Grove- They are two separate beings with bodies, We are made in their image, God knows your name, etc.
Book of Mormon- We have additional scriptures today because of the Restoration including the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants, etc.
Joseph Smith as an adult- We have living prophets and apostles today.
Hymnbook- Emma Smith organized the first hymn book in our church so we can worship God through song. A song of the righteous is a prayer to God. Hymns play an important role in our worship today such as preparing us to take the sacrament.
Baptism- The correct way to perform baptisms with the proper authority has been restored. We can do baptisms for the dead.
Sacrament Trays- With the Priesthood being restored we are able to partake of this sacred ordinance regularly. We come unto Christ as we partake of the Sacrament. You can even talk about ways we can prepare ourselves for this ordinance.
Temple- Families can be sealed together forever, we are endowed with power, and we can help those who were not able to receive their ordinance in this life. You can also talk about how temples are houses of God and the reverence required.
Modern Church Building- Joseph Smith organized The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 1830. We can now attend church meetings regularly. Discuss some things you enjoy about going to church and what we gain by doing so.
While you are talking about the First Vision, discuss ways you can #HearHim. Head to ComeuntoChrist.org for a video to watch with your family. Then share some of your experiences with your family.
Joseph Smith Coloring Pages
And as an added bonus, I made two fun coloring pages for you to use as you celebrate this Easter. One is of the First Vision and the other is Joseph Smith with the gold plates in the Hill Cumorah. Keep the fun and learning going with my Family Date Night Kit that’s all about the First Vision- Guess What?! It combines fun and laughter with learning how the First Vision applies to us.
Asking questions is often the first step to receiving answers and revelation. Joseph Smith had a sincere question- and through humble, faithful prayer, he received a powerful answer: a vision of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. That question led to the Restoration of the Gospel.
In this game, players won’t be able to see what they’re feeling- they’ll have to ask for help. Just like Joseph turned to the scriptures and found direction, participants will discover how asking the right questions can lead to understanding and insight.
