We are off to Ammonihah in Come, Follow Me Alma 8-12 "Jesus Christ Will Come to Redeem His People" (June 8-14). We’ll spend two weeks on this story. This week we meet Amulek and Zeezrom. Next week, we’ll see how they end up in jail.

Alma has great success in the city of Melek and baptizes many. He then goes to preach the gospel in Ammonihah. The people of Ammonihah are in an advanced state of apostasy and do not want to hear what Alma is preaching. They promptly kick him out. As Alma moves on to another location, an angel meets him (the same angel that visited him before) and tells him to go back and try again. This time, Amulek is prepared to meet Alma. Amulek becomes converted first and joins Alma as his missionary companion. Zeezrom tries to tempt them with money to deny what they have taught. Here are some principles you may want to focus on this week:
Preaching the gospel may require persistence and patience (Alma 8)
The Lord will provide a way for us to accomplish His work as we are faithful and diligent (Alma 8)
We are judged according to the light and knowledge we have (Alma 9:18-25; 10:16-23)
All men will stand before the Lord to be judged at the Final Judgment (Alma 11:41-46; 12:1-18)
God has provided us with a plan of redemption (Alma 11-12)
The mysteries of God are not given to those with hardened hearts (Alma 12:8-18)
I’ll no longer be doing this section. However, each month you can find additional articles and activities suggestions in the Ensign. You can easily find these articles using your Gospel Library app as shown above. You can find the latest Book of Mormon videos in the Come, Follow Section of your Gospel Library app plus there are several suggested videos each week from the Church that you can reference.
Preaching the gospel may require persistence and patience. The Lord will provide a way for us to accomplish His work as we are faithful and diligent (Alma 8)
As you read about how Alma “speedily” does what the Lord commands, consider a few other examples. Who do you know or what scriptures examples can you think of where someone quickly obeyed or intentionally did not obey the Lord’s command. Nephi is a great example of doing what the Lord asks even though he doesn’t know how it will happen. Definitely read 1 Nephi 3:7 again and show how this scripture is proven true over and over again in the Book of Mormon as well in our own lives. On the contrary, Jonah is an example of running away from a tough situation when asked to preach to the city of Nineveh. Alma could have been like Jonah but thankfully, chose to be like Nephi.
Study from Preach My Gospel this week and invite each person in your family to practice teaching one of the lessons. The rest of your family will be like the people of Ammonihah and will make it somewhat difficult. How did each person feel as they taught? What did they feel like doing? What did Alma do? Note Alma 8:10, 14. Decide as a family how you react if you find yourself in a hostile situation like this again.
There will be many who will try to get you to leave the covenant path in this life. Zeezrom tried to get Amulek and Alma to deny their faith with money. Use my worksheet to better understand the Nephite monetary system and how much Zeezrom was offering them. What are some ways people are lured away from the gospel today? How can we stand firm with God always?
We all reach a point where we question whether we should just give up. Then something or someone comes along to encourage us and we continue forward. Notice how the angel encourages Alma first. Think about some times in your life when things have been really difficult. What kept you going? You can share the story of President Gordon B. Hinckley when he felt he should come home early from his mission because he was not getting anywhere. How can we help each other during difficult times? You can also tie in ministering and why it’s important that we regularly check-in on one another.
All men will stand before the Lord to be judged at the Final Judgment (Alma 11:41-46; 12:1-18)
As you review the Resurrection and Final Judgment, play Tic Tac Toe. Divide your family into teams- one for X’s and one for O’s. As you go through the questions, if they answer it correctly, they can place their mark on the board. If it’s incorrect, the other team and steal and place their mark on the board instead. The questions are pretty simple on my worksheet.
Note: There are scripture reference clues to all answers on page 4 of the printable.
For more on the Final Judgment and Resurrection, see the helps for Revelation 12-22.
God has provided us with a plan of redemption (Alma 11-12)
Review the Plan of Salvation again. This time, ponder how it’s a plan of redemption. Look up the word “redemption” and discuss what it means and why it’s something we would want. Then using my LOVE cut-outs, review the various aspects of the plan. Each time you see how it can redeem us, stop, and make a note. You can cute the Plan of Salvation into smaller pieces or keep them as their letters depending on much detail you want to get into. There is also a page with it already assembled if you just want to color it in as you go.
President Boyd K. Packer reminded us having a knowledge of the plan helps protect us from the adversary. Knowing who we are, where we are going, our purpose, etc. gives us a reason to resist temptations and gives us strength to overcome. How have you seen this to be true in your life? How might you view things if you didn’t know about the Plan of Redemption? Who can you share the plan with?
