In this week’s lesson, Come, Follow Me Alma 5-7 “Have Ye Experience This Mighty Change in Your Hearts?”, we’ll study some key messages delivered by the prophet Alma the Younger. Alma 5 is an especially great chapter to study. Get ideas to help teach your family and free printables below.

Alma has relinquished the judgment seat and is now preaching the gospel full time. He starts in the city of Zarahemla- kind of like the capital of the Nephite nation (check out my Walk in the Land of the Nephites activity for more). Alma 5 can be viewed as a General Conference talk; it is packed with important truths. If you only get to one chapter this week, make it Alma 5. After Zarahemla, Alma moves on to the city of Gideon where the people have been faithful. Here are some important things to learn in this week’s study:
As we experience and continue to feel a mighty change of heart; we will be prepared to meet our God (Alma 5:14-33).
We can gain our own testimony that Jesus Christ is our Savior and this is His true gospel through the testifying power of the Holy Ghost (Alma 5:33-62).
Diligent obedience helps us stay on the straight and narrow path back to God (Alma 7).
Jesus Christ can save us from sin, death, and help us through our mortal challenges (Alma 7:7-13).
Sincere repentance steers us to develop Christlike attributes (Alma 7:14-24).
As I adjust to the hit from COVID-19 to my website, I’ll no longer be doing this section. However, each month you can find additional articles and activities suggestions in the Ensign. You can find the latest Book of Mormon videos in the Come, Follow Section of your Gospel Library app plus there are several suggested videos each week from the Church that you can reference.
I love providing free printables and ideas to help you with your studies and will continue to do so; however, I need to cut back on how much I offer here now as well.
As we experience and continue to feel a mighty change of heart; we will be prepared to meet our God (Alma 5:14-33)
Illustrate a changing heart by having some fun with color-changing experiments! There are lots you can do but here are ones we’ll be doing:
Color Changing Milk Experiment (pictured above- super fun and easy)
- Color Changing Slime- I ordered solar glue to show how we must continue to make those good choices to keep that mighty change of heart. There are lots of slime recipes on Pinterest- pick your favorite!
Jesus Christ can save us from sin, death, and help us through our mortal challenges (Alma 7:7-13)
Make your own succulent bouquet as you talk about how Jesus Christ knows how to succor us (you could also use suckers). Each succulent has one way Christ saves us through His Atonement. How do each of these things allow Christ to succor us? Elder Jeffrey R. Holland reminds us that succor literally means “to run to.” What images does that bring to your mind? How has Christ succored you? How do you think He might be able to do so in the future? How do we allow Christ to run to our aid? Read Alma 7:11-13 as you discuss this.
Tip- Skip printing the patterned paper and use whatever colorful paper you have around your house. To fold, diagonally fold one corner across half the page then do it again on the other side. I taped my succulents to the back and the front so they wouldn’t fall out. Then when we talk about it, I can have each child pick one out.
Spread out several images of Jesus Christ. Which one speaks to your family? Ask each member to pick an image that shows them how Christ succors us. Then go around and explain why you picked that image. Hang yours up in the living room or bedroom this week as a reminder.
Sincere repentance steers us to develop Christlike attributes (Alma 7:14-24)
As you read these verses consider the following questions:
What does Alma encourage us to “lay aside”?
On what condition did Alma promise the people of Gideon eternal life?
What did the Spirit teach Alma about these people?
What attributes will we possess if we are able to “walk blameless before [God]”?
What steps do we need to take in order to develop Christlike attributes?
Why do you think developing Christ-like attributes is a step-by-step process?
Start building your eagle’s wings! Fold a piece of paper accordion-style lengthwise. As you make each fold, discuss some of the things we must do to develop Christlike attributes as well as some of the attributes we should strive to develop. If you print out my wing page, there are attributes on each fold- start folding with “repentance.” Cut out the eagle including the white ovals in the eagle’s body. Slide your accordion-folded paper in through the ovals of the eagle’s body to make him wings. Hang him up to watch him fly!
Why an eagle? Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf reminded us that as we develop these Christlike attributes, they can “bear [us] up as on eagles’ wings” (see D&C 124:18 and “Christlike Attributes- the Wind beneath Our Wings” October 2005). How do you feel your Christlike attributes have sustained you? Why is repentance the first step in developing these attributes? How does having a mighty change of heart apply here? You may want to read and discuss Elder Uchtdorf’s talk.
