In this week’s lesson, John 1: We Have Found the Messiah, we study how Christ created the world, how many have testified of Jesus Christ, and how others have seen God. Find study helps, teaching ideas, and free printables below!

How are you enjoying the New Testament thus far? I hope it has provided for some great discussion, new understanding, and a stronger testimony.

Questions to Ponder

Use these questions to help you ponder as you do your personal studies, encourage journaling for your kids, text them to a friend or child to get the conversation going, or take them with you in the car and randomly draw from a bag as you carpool to school or your next practice. These go beyond the questions in the manual.

  • Do you think you would have recognized Jesus as the Son of God had you met Him while He was on the earth? Why?

  • In what ways have you come to see that Jesus is the Christ?

  • How has knowing the Plan of Salvation been helpful to you in your life?

  • How does your personal testimony contribute to the strength of the Church?

  • In what ways has your testimony sustained you?

  • How does your testimony influence your actions?

  • What experiences have helped you gain your testimony?

  • How can you strengthen your testimony?

  • Why do you feel your testimony grow stronger the more you share it?

  • What can you do to overcome any fears of sharing your testimony?

  • In what ways have you been blessed by the testimonies of others?

  • What have been some of the fruits of your testimony?

  • How can you share your testimony more frequently? How can others in your life benefit from your testimony?

  • When you search for answers, what helps you find true sources of truth? What methods have you used in your pursuit of truth?

  • How can you properly defend the doctrines of the gospel, including the doctrine of gender and the family, in the face of opposition without being confrontational?

  • God’s “work and glory” is to bring about the “immortality and eternal life of man?” (Moses 1:39). How does knowing the doctrine of the gospel help with this work? What is our part in bringing to pass this work and glory?

  • When have you sought learning “by study and also by faith”? How did it make a difference to include faith in your learning process instead of simply study? Why does study need to be a part of the journey?

  • How has knowing who you are, why you are here, and where you are going made an impact in your life? Was there a time it brought you comfort? Has it guided you in your life choices? What difference has that knowledge made?

  • How can our current knowledge of gospel truths help us when there are things we might not understand yet?

  • What can we learn when our search for truth hits a dead end or we don’t receive an answer to prayer? Why wouldn’t we find an answer?

  • How has access to truth changed through history?

  • How does Satan, the father of lies, use truth to deceive? How can we increase our ability to discern truth?

  • Why are you sometimes afraid to share the gospel? How can you overcome those fears?

  • How can you increase your desire and faith to share the gospel?

  • What is your motivation to share the gospel?

  • In what ways have you become a son or daughter of God?

  • Why is it important to you to know that many have seen God?

  • What else do you know about John the Beloved? How does understanding who John is help you as you read his work?

  • How has the Savior been a light for you in your life?

  • How can you share the light of the Savior?

  • Why do you feel light is good description of Jesus Christ?

Teaching Ideas

These are my ideas. My hope is that my thoughts may be a springboard to your own great ideas that are right for you and your family. Some ideas are for families with young children while others might be for widows meeting together as a group. Read through and find what’s right for your situation. Please Note: There are some creation resources in the Activity Page section below, however, the teaching ideas for the creation are on the Primary lesson helps as it focuses more on that.

Who Was John? and Jesus Christ was “in the beginning with God.”

Please remember when sharing, you can share this blog post but you may NOT link directly to the printable itself. Thank you for your support!

  • Add my John profile card to your Bible info card collection. If you choose to read more about John, add the additional things you learn on the back.

  • Print out the first five verses of John 1 using my free handout. Glue it in your journal and mark it up as you compare these five verses to the Joseph Smith Translation. What’s different? How does that change your understanding? Then encourage your group or family to continue noticing the differences in the rest of the JST for this chapter.

Please remember when sharing, you can share this blog post but you may NOT link directly to the printable itself. Thank you for your support!

  • Take this opportunity to discuss the plan of salvation again with your family. Use my free plan of salvation cut-outs to describe the plan and show how it’s a plan of love. Then go back through the plan showing Jesus Christ’s role in it all. What did He do in the premortal existence? What did He do while on earth? Discuss how we’ll learn more about the things Christ did on earth in our studies as well as what He has done since being in the Spirit World.

  • Need a simpler plan of salvation activity? Grab my free coloring page from my Primary 1 Lesson 3 helps. Add some foil star stickers for extra fun! There is also a page you can glue on steps we take as we follow Heavenly Father’s plan for us in the Primary 3 Lesson 2 handouts.

  • Invite the full time missionaries to dinner and ask them to share a lesson about The Plan of Salvation. You could invite members of your group or family to role play the part of an investigator during the lesson. Then practice teaching each other the plan of salvation so you can be better prepared to share it with a friend.

Disciples of Jesus Christ Bear Witness of Him

  • Ask for a volunteer to come to the front of the room and ask them something they have a testimony about- tithing, the Word of Wisdom, the scriptures, etc. As they tell you, give them a weight to use and ask them to use it until you say otherwise. When they get tired, ask who else has a testimony of that same principle and ask them to sub in. Compare this to how our testimony takes constant work and effort as well as how hearing other people’s testimonies can strengthen our own.

Please remember when sharing, you can share this blog post but you may NOT link directly to the printable itself. Thank you for your support!

  • Use my free testimony cards to make a Family, Group, or Personal Testimony Book. Write down your testimony on the themed cards on the same day every month. At the end of the year, read back through some of the things your family or group have written down and see how your testimony has grown.

  • Have a paint night! Use this example of how we paint our testimonies. Then discover other ways we might be able to share our testimonies without words. Challenge your family or group to try one this week.

  • Talk about how we can overcome our fears of sharing our testimony. Use the free 2 Timothy 1:7-8 printable included in my Gordon B. Hinckley helps. Ask your group, family, or self before you do your official lesson what keeps you from sharing your testimony with others. Write each reason on a sticky note then cover up the scripture poster with all the excuses. When you meet together, discuss ways you can conquer those fears. As you come up with solutions, take the sticky notes off. Read the scripture out loud together once it’s revealed and encourage each other to share testimony often.

  • Read The Living Christ in your lesson and challenge yourself or your family/group to study it then write down their own testimony of Jesus Christ. You can print a copy to give to everyone at LDS.org or head to Prickly Pear Designs to print a free study journal and posters based on The Living Christ. I also have a free printable to help you memorize The Living Christ in 12 Days.

  • Have a testimony meeting with your family or group at the end of the week. Color in one piece of this puzzle as each family member shares.

  • Write out a “battle plan” for when you are bombarded with opposition about gospel truths and having your testimony attacked. You could draw a “battle plan” and even refer to some of the Book of Mormon battles and their strategies to learn how we can use them today.

Has Anyone Seen God?

Please remember when sharing, you can share this blog post but you may NOT link directly to the printable itself. Thank you for your support!

  • Print out my timeline activity to discuss when people have seen God. As you add the cards to the timeline, read the scriptures and show how God testifies of His Son, the Savior of the World. What are some things we must do if we want to see God again?

  • Use this Question and Answer page from the New Era to discuss how to handle a situation where friends say that no man can see God.

John 1:4-10
