Discussion Question
Christ was and is always triumphant despite being put in difficult and devious situations. How does knowing that help you in your daily life?
What dangers have you seen of oversimplifying or “dumbing down” Christ’s teachings? How can we avoid such pitfalls while still teaching truth to all- our children, new converts, investigators, neighbors, etc.?
What can we do when we find ourselves uncomfortable with one of Christ’s teachings?
We need to hold on to what Jesus Christ has actually said. This means we need to know His words and study the scriptures. We can use the scriptures as a litmus test when we come across other resources to make sure we are immersing ourselves in full truth, not half-truths. What are some of the different ways you enjoy studying Christ’s words?
Why do you feel obedience to God’s word- all of His words- is an important part of charity? Why can’t it be charity without obedience?
Mature love exemplifies, empowers, and imparts. What are some ways we can recognize counterfeit love then?
Christlike love, charity, never faileth. How have you felt Christ’s love empower you and help you overcome?
How can remembering there is a real force opposing all the good we do help us love better?
What's the difference between ministering and ministering with Christlike love? How can we ensure our ministering is motivated by Christlike love?
What keeps us from truly loving another and showing it? What are some ways we can more actively show our love for others and God? What opportunities do we have in class to show Christlike love?
How have you been blessed by someone that has shown you Christlike love?
How have you felt the Savior's love in your life? How does Christlike love for others bless our own lives?
What are some things that help you better align your will to that of God’s so that you can have true charity?
What are some examples of ways you have seen Christ’s teachings trivialized in the world? What are truths we can clearly and lovingly testify of in response?
Why do you stay the course when life get hard? How can we lift each other and encourage each other on as we endure to the end?
What are some ways we can follow Christ’s example of loving God?
Teaching Tips
These are my ideas. My hope is reading my thoughts will be a springboard to finding the right plans for your class.
President Holland asked us, “How did Jesus love?” Invite your class to take a few minutes to explore their scriptures then answer the question by citing scripture references or stories with their response. Our scripture reference bookmark can be helpful. How then can we define Christlike love or charity? Go back to President Holland’s words and share some quotes that answer his question such as “First, He loved with ‘all [of His] heart, might, mind and strength,’ giving Him the ability to heal the deepest pain and declare the hardest reality. In short, He is one who could administer grace and insist on the truth at the same time.” President Holland mentions one more characteristic of Christ’s charity which is obedience. What can we then take away from Christ’s example and apply to our own lives? What might loving with grace and truth as Christ did look like as a parent, child, sibling, neighbor, stranger, online? Why do we struggle with loving some this way but not others? What can help us love everyone as Christ does?
Discuss what keeps us from loving others more purely. For example, when we get caught up in the comparison cycle it's hard to feel love for those people. What can we do when we have completely different ways of doing things and allow that to drive a wedge between us instead of a bond? How can we hold on to all of God’s truths in a loving way, without comparison getting in the way of loving others? How does comparison stop us from loving God?
Help your class start pondering before you start your discussion. Hand out slips of paper at the door that say, "I have felt truly loved by someone when...." How does understanding how you have been loved help us show Christlike love to others- with both grace and truth?
Go to your church’s library and borrow all the pictures you can that show Christ loving others. Hang these all over the front of the room as visual inspiration for your class as you ask questions. Your old Come Follow Me manuals are also a great resource for images.
