Elder Gong served a full-time mission in the Taiwan Taipei Mission.
He first met his wife, Susan, when he provided firesides at the Provo Missionary Training Center. She was one of the missionaries going to Taiwan. Two years later, they met again and dated every day for four weeks. They continued their courtship across the ocean as Elder Gong was attending England’s University of Oxford.
Elder and Sister Gong got engaged over the telephone.
He has been on the faculty at Oxford, worked on the staff of the Reagan-Bush reelection campaign, been a special assistant to the Under Secretary of the State Department, a special assistant to the U.S. ambassador in Beijing, China, filled several positions at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., and an assistant to the president for strategic planning at BYU.
He can trace his ancestry back to First Dragon Gong, born in AD 837.
Elder and Sister Gong raised their family for nearly 20 years in the Washington, D.C. area. They also live in Beijing, China for a time. They have four sons.
