The M stands for Melvin which is also his father’s name.
He was mission president of the Canada Toronto Mission. In fact, much of his church service has been focused on missionary work.
He has two grandfathers that were also members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
During his childhood, his family wasn’t the most active in the Church.
When he got a call from President Hinckley’s office (under President Kimball’s direction) to meet, he assumed he would either move overseas as a member of the Quorum of the Seventy or be asked to speak in General Conference. He was quite surprised, it was an invitation to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
When he, President Howard W. Hunter, or Jon Huntsman had a health issue, they would take each other out for frozen yogurt.
He was the president of the Ballard Motor Company, a car dealership. He also was involved in real estate and investment businesses.
